Hiking

Mission Peak

4/17/2005

We started the hike not particularly early and motivated. Mission peak is this grassy peak in the range of grassy mountains of the east bay, with a singularly peaky shaped peak, looking impressive among all its rounder shaped neighbours. It is listed as a "strenuous" hike, with a 2000 feet vertical drop, that promises glorious views of the bay. I, for one, did not really think I would actually complete the hike, after just injuring my back the day before. However, encouraged by the presence of quite a few very young hikers, and the lovely view of the green hills, not to mention being distracted by numerous flying humans in our airspace -- Mission Peak appears to be a prime site for all kinds of gliding activities -- pretty soon we found ourselves up quite high. Finally I started thinking of the way down the slippery slopes (slippery because of the many pebbles on the path) and decided to quit, but my fellow hikers marched on and reported rewarding views accompanied by high winds at the top.
