Xi'an, an ancient capital for many past dynasties, was mercifully not overdeveloped like Beijing. The air, however, seemed to be even more poluted and the city appeared to be in a perpetual haze. There's so much to see here: the first emperor's tomb (which has yet to be excavated) and his magnificent underground army, temples and villas tracing back to the Tang dynasty, and lots of delicious local treats.
Mount Hua, a huge granite mountain rising out of the plains, reaching 2160 metres above sea level. The path to the top was carved right on the ridge of the mountain, with cliffs on both sides, treating hikers to splendid views (though there were sensible warnings along the path that read: Do not look at the scenery when you are walking!). We felt very accomplished just to hike up the path to the top. Imagine how difficult it was for the people who made the path!
