Emily in WA State Champ

Last Saturday we traveled to Lyndon, WA (near the Canadian border) so Emily could play in the Washington Elementary championships. This was the largest chess tournament ever in WA with over 1100 players. There were 80 players in the Kindergarden section. Emily did very well winning 4 games and only losing to the tournament champion, Kevin Ma. Her result was good enough for 4th place and a >very< big trophy.

Here are Emily and Kevin with their trophies. Kevin was the highest rated going into the tournament and he won't even start Kindergarden till this fall (he just turned 5).

After the tournament we spent the night in Lyndon at a bed and breakfast. We had the top floor to ourselves (apparently because no one else wanted to be just under the vane motor!).

On Sunday we had a small hike in the snow near Mt. Baker and then it was back to Seattle!

A few more hikes and outings

Hmmm, we've actually hiked quite a bit lately:

Spring brings an abundance of wild flowers to Edgewood Preserve, and us admirers, twice! Still we have not caught the flowers at their prime yet. I am even thinking of going there again sometime...

Tennesee Valley Trail: a nice easy hike to the beach, had to negotiate through puddles, though.

Mission Peak: 2000 feet above the bay, panorama of the bay, grassy hills, and colorful gliders ("flying people"!).

And there are some more pictures in the city: exhibition on the war in Iraq, panorama from Tank Hill. And a trip to Napa:

小燕来访以及滑雪

有一天,电话铃响了,我一接,居然是小燕! "我们在旧金山!"她宣布. 这次他们一家三口全来了, 沿海一路开下了洛杉机又回来,好好游玩了一回. 下面是小燕和明明在Stanford.

更多照片在这里.

上周末我们又去滑雪. 四月的天又下起了不小的雪, 让我们都怀疑是否能把车开回家了. 好在空空的雪场对练习很有帮助. 下午雪停了,我们回家路上还经过酒厂品酒...
